30 Days of No Booze!

It’s already May 1st – can you believe it?! Every time a new month hits, I like to reflect on the prior one. What went well? What challenges did I face? What improvements can I make this month?

So for the month of May, I have decided to do a 31-day challenge! Because who doesn’t love a little challenge and competition in their life? For the month of May, I challenge myself not to drink a single drop of alcohol.

To be honest, I don’t drink a lot anyways. When you turn 28, you realize alcohol does not love you as much as it once did! But when I do have a glass of wine or a couple of beers, I have noticed that it doesn’t actually make me feel very good! I tend to feel puffy and achy the next day, and I find myself asking every single time, “Were those 2 beers worth it?”

When I do actually partake in drinking, the only reason I do it is for the social aspect. When I go out to dinner, or have a get together, it is sort of just the norm to crack a beer, cheers and sip on it throughout the evening. But the more and more I thought about this, the more I realized I have made it a habit to have some alcohol, even if it is just one glass, whenever I go out on the weekend or when we have a dinner party, etc.

And what bothers me about this is that I would have just as good of a time if I were not consuming alcohol. I mean, I don’t drink during the week or when I am socializing at my job, or when I am chatting at breakfast in the morning with my husband, so why do I feel the need to use alcohol as my social crutch when I go out? Of course, there can be awkward moments when meeting new people or trying to make conversation, but for this month I will embrace the awkwardness and power through!

I fully understand this is going to be difficult at times. When everyone else around you is drinking, even if they are not pressuring you to drink, you still feel pressured. Why is that? I don’t know, but I guess I will find out! I already know of 2 social obligations where alcohol will be present this month, so I promise you I am partaking in this experiment at the right time and for the right reasons. Yikes…
